Nigeria and South Africa have a long-standing history of creative collaboration, and fashion has emerged as a particularly exciting point for this exchange. From red-carpet glamor to everyday streetwear, the two nations have consistently produced iconic looks that have captured hearts worldwide.

South African media personality Bonang Matheba made a daring statement at the 2024 Miss South Africa ceremony by wearing five stunning outfits designed by Nigerian fashion houses. The highlight of the evening was a mermaid-style dress by VeeKee James, a renowned Nigerian designer known for her architectural elegance and tastefully constructed couture pieces. The gown, described by Matheba as “Met Gala” worthy, is exactly the magic that happens with the fusion of Nigerian design aesthetics and South African glamour.

Another iconic collaboration is the enduring partnership between Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa and South African designer Gert-Johan Coetzee. Their collaboration has resulted in numerous stunning looks, from the emerald gown she wore to the South African premiere of Bridgerton to the pink Japanese-inspired piece from the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Coetzee’s designs have consistently complemented Makinwa’s style and elevated her red-carpet presence.

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has also made his mark on the Nigerian-South African fashion scene. His collaboration with South African designer Thebe Magugu at the 2022 DSTV Delicious Festival was a standout moment. Magugu’s custom-made Technicolor Bomber, lined with Dark Red Ostrich Feathers, perfectly complemented Burna Boy’s energetic stage presence. The striking fabric used in the outfit, featuring intertwined figures holding hands, was meant to represent the bond between the two nations.

Renowned Nigerian stylist Swanky Jerry has played a leading role in crafting the fashion identities of both Nigerian and South African celebrities. His collaborations with South African actress Pearl Thusi have been particularly noteworthy. From the deconstructed red gown to the shimmering zebra print ensemble, Swanky Jerry’s styling has consistently elevated Thusi’s red-carpet appearances.

Behind the scenes, South African stylist Phupho Gumede K has been instrumental in curating the fashion looks for the cast of the Netflix hit reality series “Young, Famous and African.” By styling stars from both Nigeria and South Africa, Gumede K has cemented the fashion connection between the two countries.

These collaborations are just a few examples of the rich fashion exchange between Nigeria and South Africa. The two nations have consistently produced iconic looks that have mesmerized the whole world, and we can’t wait to see what else comes of it.
