Demystifying South Africa’s Afropop Princess, ‘Tyla’

When did Tyla rise that she’s shaking everywhere and making waves” is a very valid question to ask right now. You’re not alone wrong to wonder and it’s okay to make an attempt to demystify this artiste who is now making way to claim a title I’ll regard as the “Taylor Swift of Afro Pop”

The globe went crazy when Tyla, the South African princess, dropped ‘Water’— it came with a refreshing burst of wonderment at the build of that song, as well as how diverse it could blend in with any culture of any kind. Little wonder the song made so much noise at its release, not only becoming a hit sensation on the internet, but as well being the forte of the artist winning Best African Music Performance.

So yes, “When did Tyla rise that she’s shaking everywhere and making waves”. And if you begin to properly analyze and dissect, you’ll make a very core observation of the style of Tyla, you’ll understand that her energy is like none other, as though she’s creating for herself a path to suit her aura, refusing to conform to the typicality of working in the footsteps of others before her, forging a path for herself. Such brilliant concept.

Except you’re trying to make a comparison and which you must include of course, the fact that Nigeria has a Tyla version, that person being Ayra Starr. This however is an entirely different conversation for another day.

Who else like this writer did not expect the creative curation of album that Tyla proceeded to drop sometime in the month of March? Whereas one envisioned her as an artist of soft aura and soft style, her creativity definitely comes with brass and solidity— such that led to the creation of her self titled debut album, ‘Tyla’

All it took Tyla was the span of a year, to create magic with her sound, infuse her roots and incorporate style to be a formidable figure in the African music industry, and that goes to say kudos to the South African princess!

It’s no bother trying to demystify Tyla from the angle of he earlier released singles, as her debut album ‘Tyla’ has brought in a fresh different perspective on her creativity and personality, as though a message is being issued out that “I can be as much Taylor Swift as much as I can be a Miley Cyrus” (understand the context by understanding the intensity of these western artists, thank you)

Tyla’s “Tyla” is an international standard album, having cornered for herself a Grammy plaque, it’s only normal to roll out music in an international standard, as she rightly did. Her album is packed with features from artists such as Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G, and even the yummy Tems.

Tyla’s debut album came with an intense bang, a snap that hit you hard to the core. She leans in more towards her roots, establishing a connection with her ability to play with beats and leverage with her melodies on each track. More like a note of attention to reintroduce herself as an African with affiliation to the amapiano home. Would you say you were expecting the energy that came with Safer? Quite alright, Tyla is talented, but did you see that energy coming?

One thing is sure, Tyla’s ability to correct limitations to her sound and style using this album. Nearly everyone practically was in awe at the first listen of her debut album, the focus with which she brings to each track, her synergy with featured artists and her employment of the typical Afrobeats sound, all while being clad in her regalia of soft sound style.

There comes a flaw with Tyla’s ‘Tyla’ perfection however, a supposed exhaustion with her sound. She might have messed around a few creative beats and infused some hippiness to her music, but that doesn’t twist the sound with which she carries on with in the album.

However, Tyla’s aura is majestic and angelic, which is a huge selling point for the artist, and has helped her cross international borders. One might assume without an assumption of who she is, that she’s anything but African. Tyla’s marketability is above the roof, and her style has positioned her in an even better place.

What Tyla’s music is easily sinkable in the minds of her audience, it combines a certain energy that comes heavily laced with Afrobeats. So whilst you’re channeling your inner Ashanti, you’re also expressively showcasing your dance beast, with the groove with which Tyla’s music brings.

Tyla has been able to do what can be defined as “completing the trifecta of early music success” — given how she has issued out a successful hit single, an earth smashing EP and an even more perfect album.

For her, it’s an immense milestone to have achieved such greatness at the level with which she’s embracing her success. Tyla’s make is one of a kind, and the artist is living her own path, racing her journey with no obvious contender worthy enough to have her shaking.

The sooth of her music, the manner with which her heart is poured out into her craft, is the very essence with what makes her music enthralling. There’s nothing too unveiled to demystify about Tyla, she’s really about her passion, her style and her actual craft, the music.
