Dr. Maureen Okam-Achebe isn’t your average doctor. When awards season rolls around at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, she tends to snag a prime spot on the podium. This year, she snagged the prestigious 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Awards, adding another feather to her already impressive cap.

Imagine juggling three medical specialties – that’s right, three – with the same ease most of us switch between Instagram and Twitter. Dr. Okam-Achebe is a triple-board certified medical oncologist, hematologist, and internist. Feeling faint? Don’t worry, she’s got your back (literally, in some cases). But wait, there’s more! As the daughter-in-law of the legendary Chinua Achebe, author of the iconic novel “Things Fall Apart,” excellence seems to be a family affair. Talk about a literary legacy meeting medical marvel!

At Harvard Medical School, Dr. Okam-Achebe wears more hats than a Lagos socialite during owambe season. She holds the esteemed position of Associate Professor, sharing her knowledge and expertise with the next generation of medical professionals. Concurrently, she serves as the Director of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Outpatient Infusion Centre, ensuring the smooth operation of this vital department. Her leadership extends to the Non-Malignant Hematology Clinic, where she acts as the Clinical Director, overseeing the care of patients with non-cancerous blood disorders. In addition to all these, Dr. Okam-Achebe champions crucial initiatives as the Director of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Sickle Cell Programme, actively involved in improving the lives of those affected by this chronic condition. Seriously, how does she do it all? Maybe there’s a secret stash of superhuman coffee in her office, but whatever it is, we need to bottle that energy!

The award itself speaks volumes about Dr. Okam-Achebe’s incredible impact. Dr. Charles A. Morris, the chief medical officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, personally praised her stellar contributions in everything from treating patients to groundbreaking research, teaching the next generation of medical minds, and serving the community. Her nomination by the esteemed Dr. Nancy Berliner further solidifies her rockstar status among her peers.

When Dr. Okam-Achebe’s husband, Chidi Achebe (son of the literary legend), heard the news, he couldn’t contain his pride. He took to social media with a heartwarming message that simply read: “Sweetie: Very proud of you. Keep on keeping on!” This kind of family love and encouragement is the kind of prescription we all need.

On October 28th, at the annual meeting of the medical staff, Dr. Okam-Achebe will be formally recognized for her exceptional contributions. This event will be a shining example of how one person’s dedication and hard work can have a ripple effect across the medical field.

Dr. Maureen Okam-Achebe’s ability to excel in multiple areas sets a high bar for aspiring medical professionals everywhere. As she receives this well-deserved award, we erupt in a thunderous round of applause.
