Adulthood Is a Scam: Here’s How to Deal With It

242 0

It’s that time of the month again: salary week! For many of us, this is the best week of the month. We get our hard-earned money, and we can finally start to relax and enjoy ourselves… for a couple of days lol. For the rest of us, salary week is a reminder of the scam that is adulthood and that we are in a never-ending rat race.

Adulthood is a scam. We all know this. There’s even a popular song that attests to this fact. We’re told that if we work hard and play by the rules, we’ll be successful. But the truth is, the system is rigged against us. We’re saddled with debt, we’re overworked, and we’re constantly bombarded with messages telling us that we’re not good enough. Every day is a struggle for survival and it’s giving very much ghetto and God abeg vibes.

But now that we have been thoroughly scammed and there’s no way back, what are we to do but keep pushing. At least there are still some things to look forward to. Salary week is one of them. It’s the one week of the month when we can finally feel like we’re getting ahead. We can pay our bills, we can buy ourselves something nice, and we can even save a little bit of money. By the next week, the feeling has faded.

So how can we make the most of salary week? Here are a few tips:

Pay your bills first.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to get your bills out of the way so you can enjoy the rest of your money with no guilt. You can make a list of all your bills and their due dates or set up automatic payments for as many bills as possible. If you can’t afford to pay all of your bills in full, make sure to prioritize and pay the most pressing ones first.

Buy yourself something nice.

You definitely deserve it because if you’re working and paying bills in this economy, you deserve everything good. Treat yourself to a new outfit, a book you’ve been wanting to read, or a night out with your friends. Don’t go overboard to avoid regret, but do something that will make you happy. Even if you’re on a tight budget, there are still ways to treat yourself without breaking the bank. For example, you could go to the library instead of buying a new book, or you could cook a nice meal at home instead of going out to eat.

Save a little bit of money.

This will help you reach your financial goals and give you a sense of security. Even if you can only save a small amount each month, it will add up over time. There are many different ways to save money, so find one that works for you. You could set up a savings account and make automatic deposits each month, or you could put your spare change in a ‘kolo’ or piggy bank.

Do something you enjoy.

Whether it’s going to the movies, reading a book, or spending time with your loved ones, make sure to do something that you enjoy on salary week. Problems really don’t end. Relax and de-stress, and don’t feel guilty about spending money on something that you enjoy. Remember, it’s important to find a balance between enjoying yourself and being responsible with your money. Don’t feel guilty about spending money on things that you enjoy, but also make sure to save for the future.

Salary week is a reminder that even though adulthood is a scam, we can still make something good of it. What are your plans for salary week? Are you going to pay your bills, buy yourself something nice, or save a little bit of money? Let me know in the comments below!
