The festival takes place on the third day of Eid-el-Kabir, and it attracts people from all over the world. This festival, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, is one of the largest cultural festivals in Nigeria, and is a major tourist attraction.

The origins of Ojude Oba are dated back to over a hundred years ago and has a fascinating history linked to Chief Balogun Kuku. The festival is a revered way for the Ijebu people to pay homage to their king, the Awujale of Ijebuland. Over time, the festival has evolved into a celebration of Ijebu culture and tradition.

The festival also serves as a way to promote Ijebu culture to the rest of the world. The Ojude Oba festival is a colorful and vibrant event, with the streets of Ijebu Ode being filled with people dressed in traditional Ijebu attire.

The highlight of the festival is the parade of the age groups (regberegbes), who compete to see who can put on the most impressive display. The regberegbes show off their strength and agility, and they compete in wrestling matches, horse races, and tug-of-war. The winners are awarded prizes and bragging rights. They dress in elaborate costumes and carry traditional weapons.

The costumes of the age groups are made from traditional materials such as silk, cotton, raffia, leather, and often feature intricate embroidery and beadwork. In addition to the costumes, the weapons that are used in the festival include swords, spears, and shields. The weapons are often decorated with traditional symbols and motifs.

The 2023 Ojude Oba Festival was particularly special as it marked the 63rd anniversary of the reign of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona is the longest-reigning traditional ruler in Nigeria, and he is widely respected for his commitment to preserving Ijebu culture.

This year, thousands of people from all over the world gathered to witness the festival. In addition to the parade, the festival also featured traditional drumming, dancing, and music. There were also stalls selling traditional food and souvenirs. The festival had a wonderfully festive and welcoming atmosphere, and it included a variety of cultural performances, food stalls, and traditional games.

The Ojude Oba Festival is more than just a celebration of culture and tradition. It is also a time for Ijebus to come together and reaffirm their commitment to religious harmony. This year’s festival was particularly significant in this regard, as it was held under the theme of “A Lesson in Religious Harmony.” The theme was a reflection of the Ijebu people’s long history of religious tolerance, and it was a reminder that religious harmony is essential for a peaceful and prosperous society.

In his address to the crowd, Oba Adetona spoke about the importance of religious harmony and tolerance. He said that the Ojude Oba Festival is a testament to the Ijebu people’s commitment to these values. “The atmosphere of peace being enjoyed across Ijebu communities and Nigeria is a commendable feat, particularly in the face of daring challenges experienced by all of us in recent times. Unarguably, Nigeria will survive,” Oba Adetona said.
